One of the most common questions we get at Flex Industries is: Are binary and assisted reset triggers legal? The short answer is yes, at the federal level, but with important state exceptions you need to know in 2026.
The ATF distinguishes between machine guns and rapid-fire trigger systems. A machine gun fires more than one round with a single function of the trigger.
A pull-and-release (binary) trigger like the AK Flex and G-Flex requires two separate functions – one shot on the pull, and one shot on the release.
An assisted reset trigger like the Flex3MR is the first and only ATF-approved assisted reset trigger for the AR-15. It uses mechanical assistance to reset the trigger quickly, but still requires a separate pull for each shot. It is not a machine gun under federal law.

While federally legal, some states have their own restrictions on binary triggers, binary-type triggers, and rapid-fire trigger activators. As of 2026, states that commonly restrict or ban binary triggers include California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho (limited), Illinois, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C.
Assisted reset and forced reset triggers face additional scrutiny in some of these same states. Laws change fast, and some states use broad language like “trigger activator” or “rate-increasing device.”
